twofifteenmccann Introduces Ad-Free Hulu

By Erik Oster

twofifteenmccann recently launched a campaign for Hulu’s new commercial-free option, reveling in the irony of creating ads for an ad-free service.

The 30-second “Weepy” introduces the idea with a woman who can’t stop crying (and goes through a ton of tissues) while watching Hulu free of interruption. “Once the emotions start, they don’t stop” says the voiceover at the ad’s conclusion. The agency ratchets up the self-awareness even more in a series of three 15-second spots: “Director,” “Jingle” and “Fireside.” “This is me, making a commercial of you watching me, making a commercial for Hulu’s new commercial free option” says an on-screen director of one of the spots. Another features a tone-deaf “jingle-free jingle” while a third spot shows a man looking up the word “irony” in the dictionary. Whether these qualify as clever, trying too hard to be clever or too clever for their own good will really depend on the viewer, but they do at least effectively communicate the brand’s ad-free message in a memorable way.
