Twitter Tweaks User Rules, Opens Doors to Ads

On Twitter’s official blog yesterday, co-founder Biz Stone revealed that with a revision in terms of service, the microblogging brand is finally taking steps to make some money. Stone wrote, “We leave the door open for advertising. We’d like to keep our options open, as we’ve said before.”

While Stone said earlier this year that Twitter shouldn’t include banner ads on the site, the revised terms dictate that it “may include advertisements.” This could potentially mean open season for businesses to target ads to information, text, graphics, etc.

Of course, comScore stats, which show that Twitter’s site alone brings in approximately 45 million monthly unique visitors, could’ve factored into the company’s decision.

Besides handing an olive branch to advertisers, Twitter’s other significant rule change says that it is now “allowed to use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute your tweets because that’s what we do. However, they are your tweets and they belong to you.” Whew.
