Tools of the Trade: Reid Carr of Red Door Interactive

By Kyle O'Brien

Tools of the Trade is an AgencySpy feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Reid Carr, CEO and executive creative director at Red Door Interactive in San Diego.

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

My Eagle Creek Pack-It Organizer. I’m someone compelled to maintain a tidy workspace. At the same time, I also value my mobility. When I’m in new spaces and around different people, I can see things from a different perspective which, in turn, inspires new thinking. In fact, I think getting out in the wild, in the agency business, is critical to do our best work. My organizer helps me check all the boxes I need to work effectively anywhere I go. It includes chargers, spare headphones, a portable mouse (because I don’t like trackpads), an outlet extender and more.

Why is it your favorite?

I don’t have an assigned workspace at our office, so I change up where I work depending on who I want to be around or the vibe I want that day. I often work from home and different locations, so I know that if I have that organizer in my computer bag, I am going to be effective anywhere I go (unless, of course, I forget my laptop). Basically, the ritual is: Pull out the water bottle or coffee, pull out the laptop and pull out the organizer. Then, I’m off and running.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

Eagle Creek was a client of ours, so that’s how I was exposed to their products, aside from originally being a San Diego company. I’m all-in when it comes to our clients. I always become the biggest fan, loyalist and advocate. So, when we were looking at their portfolio of products, I got their luggage, Pack-It Cubes and the electronics organizer. All of their products are great, but the electronics organizer was the sleeper hit.

How does it help you be successful?

This gets to the root of why I am in the agency business in the first place. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I value being mobile and getting exposure to a lot of different things. It is critical that I am exposed to consumers, to different areas of our company and to our clients. Inspiration is everywhere.

Does it have sentimental value?

In perhaps a minor way. When I discovered the value of this thing, I started ordering and giving it to everyone as gifts. I don’t know if everyone feels the same way about the product (or organization) as I do, but whenever I see one, I feel like I’ve found my kindred spirit.

Do you think your tool could go TikTok viral? Why or why not?

Oh dear, I certainly hope not. I don’t want myself or anything I am personally associated with (aside from amazing client work) to go TikTok viral.
