Tools of the Trade is an AgencySpy feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Natalie Jacome, media planner and buyer at Fuse Create in Toronto.

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

My Spotify account. Music was always been a big part of my life growing up—it was always something playing in the background at home. I carried that practice with me as I grew up. I listened to music to pump myself up before soccer games as a kid, to focus when studying in university, and simply for fun. I have a very eclectic taste in music, so I associate a different genre of music for every mood or occasion. Nowadays I listen to music to help inspire me and get the creativity flowing.

Why is it your favorite?

I utilize it every day and it brings me little bits of joy throughout the day. From my drive to and from the office, a morning workout, prepping for a presentation or simply at my desk. Music is always there in the background and helps me to focus and complete tasks effectively. Spotify can be taken anywhere you have a device.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

Spotify became my go-to music streaming platform in university. I’d heard of it word of mouth. Ever since then I have utilized it daily.

How does it help you be successful?

Depending on the mood, I’ve got a go-to artist or playlist ready to go. If I need to be focused and productive, or if I need to get some creativity flowing, or even if I need to get pumped up for a big presentation it is something I turn to.

Does it have sentimental value?

I have been utilizing the platform for many years now to save all of my favorite songs, so it is sentimental in the sense that I would be devastated if I ever lost my account.

Do you think your tool could go TikTok viral?

It is a crowd favorite among the music streaming platforms and goes viral yearly for its personalized wrapped report, where you’ll get a nostalgic review of your year in music.
