SF Egotist Brings Us Up to Speed on the Bay Area Ad Scene

By Kiran Aditham

As part of our ongoing effort to expand the brand, AgencySpy is giving it a shot and aligning with The Denver Egotist and its network to bring you up to speed on happenings outside of our NYC hub. Let’s dip our toes into something new and see how this plays out, shall we? First stop: San Francisco. Take it away, Egotist.

Here’s a secret about San Francisco: We have such mediocre weather all year that when it gets hot–like the past two or three months–all the women downtown throw on strappy sun dresses en mass. It suddenly becomes Spring Break Cancun in the Financial District.

Here’s another secret about SF: The summers are usually the slow time for advertising, but this city has just been killing it recently with account wins, hiring, creative, etc.

While SF agencies didn’t fare too terribly well at Cannes earlier in the month, Pereira & O’Dell won Ad Age’s Small Agency of the Year and Heat won the West Region Small Agency of the Year. Those two shops join a long line of small-to-midsized SF agencies that have cranked out great work for years.

On the creative side, SF has suddenly turned into a car account town. Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners did a fun campaign for Mini where they challenged Porsche to a race. Venables, Bell & Partners continued their beautiful work for Audi. And Goodby, Silverstein and Partners won Chevy and started the rebranding of that iconic American car company. The flip side is the new Tesla Motors site that Odopod created for the all-electric manufacturer who is suddenly getting tons of press.

The highlight of the summer though was the SF rappers and their song about discount clothing store Ross. Ok, maybe “highlight” is a bit of an overstatement.

Job-wise, our own agency spies tell us that AKQA has about 47,000 open recs and Organic is sucking up every freelancer in the Bay Area. Goodby obviously went on a hiring spree after winning Chevy that may still be continuing. And even places like Draft/FCB and Razorfish need people. It’s a great time to be a freelancer in SF–especially if you have digital experience.

And then finally, to toot our own horn, The San Francisco Egotist launched The Egotist Briefs–a series of interviews with some of the most important creative people in the Bay Area. PJ Pereira, Steve Stone, Paul Venables, Tony Cordero, Paul Curtin and Lionel Carreon, with more big names to come–none of which will be pictured in strappy sundresses however.
