Ogilvy Starts Inspiration-Based Cannes Video Contest

By Bob Marshall

Okay, so you may get this model’s phone number if you’re funny enough to win her heart, but nowhere in the contest rules does it say that she’s required to answer when you call her. So, why would someone offer up a date with a hot Brazilian model on YouTube for free? Well, as with all things of this nature, there are stings attached.

To commemorate what would be David Ogilvy’s 100th birthday, Ogilvy is throwing a company-wide contest with the winners receiving a round trip ticket to Cannes this year to be the agency’s on the ground Twitter reporter. All you have to do is come up with a video based on the theme of “inspiration” and the top 10 videos will eventually be judged by Ogilvy’s creative leadership. Doesn’t sound too difficult, but then it does. That’s how these ad contests work – the more you overthink it, the worse off you could potentially be. See the full memo from Ogilvy’s global CD, Tham Khai Meng, after the jump and see the submissions and official rules here. Not employed by Ogilvy? Sorry, you can’t enter.

“This year marks a hundred years since the birth of our founding father, David Ogilvy. To mark the occasion, we will be holding a special centennial celebration at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in June, and we have two tickets to be won! To win them, all you have to do is team up with a colleague and shoot a short video on the theme of inspiration. That’s right: Inspiration. What is it? Where does it come from? How can we engender it?

You are free to interpret the brief any way you like; we won’t tell you what to shoot.

Just show us something that inspires you and inspires us.

David Ogilvy, as everyone knows, was a truly inspirational leader, the original architect and evangelist of pervasive creativity; and we can’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate his birthday. Your movie will be a valuable contribution to our ongoing commitment to creativity.

The top ten videos, ranked by the most views, will be judged by our creative leadership. You will be responsible for driving those views.

The winners will soon find themselves aboard a plane, flying in to join us in Cannes. They will also be given the chance to be our on-the-ground blogger for the week. It really is an opportunity not to be missed.

So partner up, put your inspiration caps on, and start brushing up your French. For official rules, please visit: http://www.ogilvy.com/contest”
