Nike’s Phil Knight: Tiger Incident(s) a “Minor Blip”

By Kiran Aditham

Calling it just “part of the game” when it comes to inking endorsement deals with athletes, Nike chairman/co-founder Phil Knight reiterates earlier Nike sentiments that the brand and Tiger Woods aren’t parting ways anytime soon.

In an interview with SportsBusiness Journal, Knight says, “I think he’s been really great. When his career is over, you’ll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now.” According to Knight, Tiger “came out clean” when Nike did a background check before signing Woods to its roster.

Meanwhile, despite earlier reports, Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer is standing by their man, with company spokeswoman Mariam Sylla telling the AP, “We will continue. He’s the best in his domain” and adding that Woods’ personal strife is “not our business.”

The same, though, can’t be said for Accenture, which officially severed ties with the #1 golfer after a six-year contract.
