Jeff Goldblum Shows You How to Act in the Face of Holiday Disappointment in AMV BBDO’s ‘Spare the Act’ for Currys PC World

By Erik Oster

AMV BBDO launched the first-ever dedicated Christmas campaign for CurrysPC World, featuring actor Jeff Goldblum.

In the campaign, Goldblum awkwardly drops in on a series of scenarios in which people struggle to hide their disappointment in the face of letdowns. In “Foot Talc,” for example, a woman’s boyfriend struggles to mask his disappointment for the gift her father feigned excitement for over the past twenty years. Goldblum offers the man some acting advice before returning to a spot on the floor and finding four quid. The lengthy “Jigsaw,” meanwhile shows a woman let down by her husband’s jigsaw puzzle gift. Goldblum offers to do some roleplay as the woman getting the gift she really wanted, a Microsoft Surface, and the husband gets a little carried away with the exercise. Other spots show a family reacting to a burned turkey and another group struggling to watch a movie on Nanna’s old TV set. Each ad ends by presenting Currys PC World as the solution to the problems, allowing viewers to “Spare the Acting.” Beginning today with “Foot Talc”, five spots will break on five different days, as AMV BBDO’s Goldblum-powered ridiculousness will surely attract attention. Supporting elements in the campaign include digital, radio, print and social.

“Nothing is more powerful than the truth and the very real truth at Christmas is that most of us receive rubbish presents,” said AMV BBDO executive creative directors Alex Grieve and Adrian Rossi. “And because we’re nice and good and wholesome people we shield those we love from this stark reality. We act. This campaign playfully reminds us there is an alternative. Go to a place that understands what people really want. Go to Currys PC World and spare the act this Christmas.”
