Hush Hires Lead Creative Technologist From Barbarian Group

Brooklyn-based experience design agency boosted its technology team with the hire of Matt Smith as lead creative technologist.

Smith will join a team that also includes lead creative technologist Nicole Messier, Smith will work with Hush’s greater design team to help deliver brand experiences utilizing emerging technology while leading innovation and integration of new technologies.

“We’re extremely excited to have Matt on board. His rock solid rigor in building technical systems, processes and platforms is so strong, it’s almost easy to overlook his innate creativity and experimental nature,” Hush partner David Schwarz said in a statement. “He’s a real polyglot – with a musical background, a photography portfolio, and much more – he’s that ideal hybrid of systems thinker and systems tinkerer. I can’t wait to see how he raises the bar for the entire company.”

An industry veteran of nearly two decades, Smith joins Hush from Barbarian Collective, where he served as technical director, working on everything from developing global websites and apps to experiential campaigns for a clients including Dentyne, Google Creative Labs, IBM and Samsung. He also developed the agency’s Alexa-based virtual receptionist “Barb,” which was designed to help visitors search for, identify and communicate with employees in the office.

In a statement, Smith said he was looking forward to exploring new creative possibilities at Hush, working closely with Hush’s creative team and helping to guide them toward risk-taking but attainable ideas, adding, “”I love the simple elegance of  Hush’s work. They take complex data and ideas and distill them down into beautiful expressions of design and technology.”
