‘Hindsight Project’ Gathers Ad World Wisdom

By Ella Riley-Adams

To combat growing unease in the advertising world and encourage young creative upstarts, Mat Zucker, Andrea Leminke and David Gaddie have founded the “Hindsight Project.” Professionals from the advertising world share everything they wish they’d known, providing well-earned wisdom to aspiring ad-makers. Contagious editorial director Nick Parish talks about learning to write clearly (below), while JWT ECD Sarah Barclay advises people to be inventive.

In addition to the videos, the Hindsight site links to their Pinterest “Board of Wisdom” and a resources and recommendations page for ambitious interns everywhere.

The Hindsight Project is a heartwarming idea, as if the Mad Men attended a yoga retreat and finally found their inner children. And the practical aspect (resource list, impressive collection of stellar ad people to contact) pairs well with inspirational words. That said, I wish the site looked less like a cobbled-together school presentation. Tiny text and sloppy content placement make it a visually unpleasant destination. But they say it’s the thought that counts—and it’s high time the ad world got a bit more thoughtful.
