George Clooney Would ‘Change Nothing’ in McCann’s Latest for Nespresso

By Erik Oster

Last November George Clooney starred alongside Danny DeVito in McCann New York’s “Training Day,” for Nespresso, which marked the actor’s U.S. debut for the brand. In McCann Worldgroup’s “Change Nothing,” Clooney shares the spotlight with another well-known actor, Ian McShane.

In the 30-second broadcast spot (there’s also a full-length online spot that we can’t seem to access here in the U.S.), Clooney takes a sip of a Nespresso at a “Tasting Area” the brand appears to have set up at some sort of event in London. A woman, also enjoying a cup of the Nespresso, approaches the actor and says with a wink, “Perfect, no?” to which he replies that he wouldn’t change a thing. A couple of angry bouncers then escort Clooney to McShane, who accuses him of fancying his wife. When we next see Clooney, he’s enjoying the beverage in a much safer environment.

“We always look to take the story to the next level and in this latest installment I think we can say that it is certainly my most eventful outing to date,” Clooney told LBB. “Bringing a more character driven approach mixed with humour has really taken the campaign to a new level.”

We have to disagree. Last year’s “Training Day” spot brought something new to Nespresso’s collaborations with the actor, with DeVito acting as a comic foil that elevated the effort beyond past efforts. “Change Nothing” feels more like a step backward, with McShane’s brief appearance only serving to advance a fairly bland and pointless plot. The spot made its debut internationally, excluding the U.S. and Canada, on September 25.
