Over the weekend I saw ‘Iron Man 2’, and it was fairly epic. But to me the real story was the battle between Audi and Ford — both brands ran spots before the trailers — and it was easy to see who had done their homework. By that I mean Ford’s spot worked and Audi’s did not.
First the ads, then the “why”.

OK so since this is the order the ads were shown I think you’ve had a relatively similar experience to mine and now I can explain why this is the Mustang wins.
It didn’t pretend to be a super hero, it didn’t include a hokey tie-in to the movie I was about to watch nor did it waste my time by showing me scenes from a movie I was about to watch — scenes I had seen in the trailers that enticed me to come to the theater. In other words, despite not having seen the trailer, I had already seen it. That immediately made the experience boring and diminished the sex-appeal of a car (the Audi R8 Spyder) that is a thousand times sexier than Ford’s Mustang.
