Doner L.A. Names Jason Gaboriau as Its First Chief Creative Officer

By Erik Oster

Doner promoted Jason Gaboriau to the newly-created position of chief creative officer of its Los Angeles office.

Gaboriau arrived at Doner L.A. as an executive vice president, executive creative director in March of 2015, alongside executive vice president, managing director Zihla Salinas.

He previously spent over three and a half years as an executive creative director with CP+B L.A., working with clients including Old Navy, Turkish Airlines, Applebee’s, A1 and Grey Poupon before leaving the agency in September of 2014. Before CP+B he was a founding partner and executive creative director at New York agency Amalgamated, where he worked with clients including Coca-Cola, Big Lots, Svedka, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, New Belgium Brewing Company and Ben & Jerry’s.

“From the day Zihla and I were hired, our vision has been to combine the muscle of Doner’s Detroit roots with the hustle of a start-up, which gave us license to really push ourselves creatively,” Gaboriau said in a statement. “What’s most exciting is that we’re just getting out of the gate with an incredible group of clients, and there’s a lot more to come from Doner LA in 2017.”

The agency credits him with recent wins including DiGiorno and Nestle.

This news follows the December announcement that global creative chairman Rob Strasberg would be leaving the ad industry to help his wife run a Detroit-based nonprofit called Humble Design that provides shelter and furnishings for formerly homeless individuals.

Doner calls Strasberg’s departure part of a planned progression after Eric Weisberg took over his former role as global CCO last summer. One source tells us that it’s unclear whether Weisberg will lead the entire network moving forward and that Strasberg and Doner global president and CEO David DeMuth had different ideas regarding the direction of the agency.
