D&AD Addresses Global Issues via Launch of White Pencil

By Kiran Aditham

Having now partnered with One Club to establish a Pencil Rankings system, the folks at D&AD are turning their focus to cause-related issues, specifically gauging the overall social conscience of ad/design industry creatives with the unveiling of the D&AD White Pencil.

What is this, you ask? Well, it’s something that will be awarded at next year’s D&AD event in London to an individual, organization or collaborators who come up with the best globally scalable idea that will raise awareness or change behavior. To help decide who wins the White Pencil, which will be judged on the same criteria as Yellow Pencils, D&AD is setting a brief with a partner cause, with the inaugural one being Peace of Day. Founded by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, POD is a 12-year-old organization that wants to establish Peace Day around the world. Well, with all the turmoil throughout the world, that’s quite an ambitious effort, Mr. Gilley. Anyhow, we’ll let the man better explain what’s going on below. FYI, the White Pencil competition doesn’t begin until October, so you have some lead time to figure out how to change the world.
