Clemenger BBDO, Aardman ‘Find Christmas at Myer’

Clemenger BBDO teamed up with animation studio Aardman to launch a holiday campaign for Australian department store Myer entitled “Where Christmas Comes For Christmas.”

The campaign is built around a 60-second stop-motion animated spot called “Find Christmas at Myer,” featuring four hand-crafted characters on their way to Myer. While the reindeer can’t wait to explore the store, the elf is inclined to stick to his meticulous list, but everyone is pretty hyped when they finally lay eyes on the department store. The production of the spot, from hand crafting the characters to the time-intensive animation process. In addition to the ad, the characters also appear on posters and in print, on a campaign microsite, social media elements and in-store activations such as catalogues, shopping bags, staff uniforms, wrapping paper, gift cards and visual merchandise displays.

“We wanted to bring a little bit of magic back to Christmas this year, but without being typically saccharine about it,” said Clemenger BBDO creative director Stephen de Wolf. “The result is something beautiful and whimsical, but with a uniquely Australian tone.”

“Everyone at Aardman loved this script straight form the start. It was funny, irreverent and very unsentimental,” added Aardman director Steve Harding-Hill. “It seemed to typify the real spirit of Christmas to us. So using traditional stop motion methods we created a magical nostalgic world that was combined with a wry modern twist.”
