Chiat’s Refresh Execution: Super Derivative of Things Like ‘Benny & Joon’

By Matt Van Hoven

Last night Pepsi’s RefreshEverything campaign went live, part of which included two YouTube videos. Both are incredibly similar to other stuff you’ve seen, meaning TBWA piggy-backed earnings from the originality of other people. See the wreckage after the jump.

Update: Apparently we have Charlie Chaplin to thank for the fork/bun table dance. H/t LittleTramp.

The first is a music video from a Japanese band called Sour. The mosaic was compiled from Web cam video of the band’s fans around the world. When this first came out it took the interWebs by storm. (note: we’ve linked to a few other spots at the bottom of the page)

Here’s PepsiOne’s follow-up, ‘One People’:

The next ad is from Google’s Chrome demonstration. You really only need to pay attention to the first 16 seconds.

Pepsi’s version (here again, just the first few seconds):

And possibly the most egregious offense from Pepsi’s new work &#151 borrowing from the Johnny Depp flick Benny & Joon. It caught my eye in the ‘One People’ mosaic because every time I have two forks and two buns in front of me I make little dancing feet.

And the perpetrator:

The sins of this campaign are everywhere. ie Kevin Bacon for 6 Degrees, Demi Moore for GEMS and a bunch of others.
