Captain Obvious Runs for President in New CP+B Campaign

By Patrick Coffee

Apparently, we are going to have to deal with at least seven more months of political spoof ads timed to coincide with the workings of our dysfunctional electoral system.

So far there’s been Bud Light, JetBlue and probably a couple of other brands we’ve forgotten by now. The latest mascot/candidate to enter the fray is Captain Obvious of Hotels.com fame in a campaign on the campaign created, of course, by our friends at Crispin Porter + Bogusky Colorado.

Here’s the anthem spot, which launched on Sunday.

Looks like they’re planning to draw out the campaign across caucuses/primaries in all 50 states. And the spot above is just the beginning, of course.

The Captain’s homepage has been remade to resemble that of a legitimate presidential contender like Brooklyn’s favorite son…Bernie Sanders.*

It also includes some merchandise including the standard t-shirts, buttons and a towel that reads “I’m not throwing in the towel” along with a couple of green screen clips of the Captain running so you can put him wherever the hell you like and a series of reaction GIFs that are too big to embed here. And let’s not forget the hotel listings…

The Captain will also be Tweeting and Facebooking his way around the country, starting in Nevada where a certain red-faced businessman will obviously triumph again tonight.

Here’s the entry for Colorado, which definitely does not in any way resemble the CP+B offices on Friday evenings.

Given our current obsession with following the primaries/ignoring friends who are following the primaries, this campaign has been pretty popular so far: it got a quick mention in People magazine yesterday.

And it’s a pretty good way to revive an arguably played-out character.

No credits yet; will post when we get them.

*Trump is from Jamaica Queens and Sanders is from Flatbush. Our mistake.
