AKQA Set to Open Berlin Office

By Kiran Aditham

AKQA announced that it’s adding to its Euro network by opening an office in Berlin. Nokia is the first client for the office, which will be led by European managing director Guy Wieynk until a proper head is found (Wieynk will remain based in the UK). According to various reports, the Berlin staffers will be developing apps for Nokia’s mobile platform, Ovi.

AKQA is now recruiting for 15+ creative, strategy and tech folks to serve the Berlin branch. In the meantime though, ten UK staffers are currently holding down the fort and working in a temporary space in the German capital.

In a statement, AKQA CEO Tom Bedecarre says, “After delivering a strong performance in a tough economy last year, AKQA is poised for continued growth in 2010. Expanding to Germany, Europe’s largest market, is an important step in our global growth plan for AKQA.”

Update: An agency spokesperson tells us that AKQA Berlin hopes to make new client announcements as well who’ll be permanently overseeing operations beyond Guy Wieynk there in about a month or so. As mentioned, approximately 25 staffers will comprise Berlin.
