To Avoid Checking Boxes, Agencies Must Make Inclusion a Cross-Organizational Effort

Universal McCann, AAF and Vox Media collaborate to carve out a new path to entry


The ad industry can be cutthroat and merciless by nature, but if marketers want to make real strides when it comes to inclusion, they must leave their self-serving tactics at the door.

“Even if I make an equitable workplace for Vox, it does no justice if other media places aren’t also moving their standards,” said Chris Clermont, head of DEI at Vox Media. “We really have to do this as a collaborative collective.” 

Vox Media and media agency Universal McCann, long-term partners in carving out opportunities for students from HBCUs and HSIs, are now tapping the American Advertising Federation to connect with a wider range of candidates.
