Gerety Awards Refreshes Brand and Website to Reinforce its Purpose

2021 grand jury and ambassadors represent female vision of advertising

Now entering its third year, the Gerety Awards has decided to refresh its brand with a new look and a new website. It has also announced its 2021 all women jury and ambassador list, representing some of the top advertising and marketing leaders.

The Gerety Awards was founded in 2019 by former Epica Awards staffers Joe Brooks and Lucía Ongay to create an award designed to support and celebrate initiatives that champion diversity in the creative industries. The revamp look comes from London-based brand storytelling studio Here We Go.

“As we move into our third year, and probably a very challenging year for the ad industry, after this year it makes sense to reinforce our purpose,” Ongay told Adweek. “We’re redefining advertising and communications by setting a new benchmark in global creative awards.”

The design better represents the diamond at the center of the awards’ founding—named after copywriter Frances Gerety, who crafted the slogan “A Diamond is Forever” in 1948.

“The concept of light refraction and the brilliance of a perfectly cut diamond reflects the quality of the awards and the women who are part of it,” said Here.We.Go. founder Louise Sloper. “The beauty that happens in the detail was important to the work.”

Sloper stated that the agency was keen to highlight many women creatives’ voices, giving the jury members prominence. According to Sloper, the tone of voice on the new website is “feminine but confident, elegant but edgy.”

“The brilliance of a perfectly cut diamond reflects the quality of the awards and the women who are part of it,” she said.

Here We Go designer George Stockley added: “There are 58 facets on a brilliant-cut diamond. This attention to detail is also what makes Gerety so well-cut. The ‘critical angle’ of 24.4 degrees has been carefully applied throughout the brand system, and the story of the diamond is always being told. Right down to the primary color inspired by the shade of a diamond polishing wheel”.

Gerety’s co-founder Lucia Ongay said that “the attention to detail has really blown us away. The brand refresh re-emphasizes the Gerety purpose and is a perfect showcase for the 2021 jury and beyond.”

The 2021 grand jury representing the USA includes:

  • Laure Ayel, global marketing and new business managing partner, Havas
  • Piper Hickman, EVP global executive creative director at McCann Worldgroup
  • Chrissie Hanson, global chief strategy officer, OMD
  • Nandini Jammi, co-founder, Sleeping Giants and co-founder, Check My Ads
  • Jennifer Risi, president and founder, The Sway Effect
  • Sheereen M. Russell, national group vice president, Advertising Sales Partner Solutions for Inclusion Audiences, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network
  • Megan Skelly, EVP/executive creative director, Edelman
  • Daniela Vojta, executive creative director, BBDO New York
  • Beth Wade, global chief marketing officer, VMLY&R
  • Tiffany R. Warren, EVP, chief diversity and inclusion officer, Sony Music Group

“Year after year, we have recruited the most respected advertising and marketing leaders from around the world,” said Ongay. “The purpose of the Gerety Awards is to show there is real value in the female vision of advertising, and for a third time we have brought a brand new jury together.”

Los Angeles will be one location for executive judging sessions with Kirsten Rutherford, group creative director, TBWA\Chiat\Day LA as the ambassador. There will be 10 executive judging sessions held around the world, with ambassadors from the U.K., Canada, Singapore, Nigeria, Italy, Hungary, Germany, France and Chile.

The worldwide 2021 jury is comprised of more than 160 leading women from the industry from 35 countries. The Gerety Awards will announce the full executive jury and open for entries in January on its website.
