Dorothy, Looking for a Wizard, Instead Finds the Mortgage Banker of Oz in New Halifax Ad

Agency adam&eveDDB seamlessly merges new and classic footage

One wouldn’t normally need to travel all the way to the Emerald City to inquire about a home loan. But then again, this Wizard of Oz homage is no normal ad for British banker Halifax.

In a new spot from agency of record adam&eveDDB, Dorothy and her friends go seeking an all-powerful wizard and find a mortgage adviser instead.

She’s too young for him to help her finance a house—which is unfortunate, given what happened to Auntie Em’s place—but he can help her make her way home.

The present-day scenes were filmed in a London studio and “painstakingly superimposed during postproduction” over original footage from the beloved 1939 film.

This ad marks the latest in a series of collaborations between Halifax and Warner Brothers. Previous spots have starred other notable characters such as Top Cat and The Fintstones in an attempt to boost the bank chain’s cross-generation appeal.

“What better place to showcase Halifax’s expertise and heritage in helping the nation’s home buyers than the Emerald City,” said Halifax managing director of brands and marketing Catherine Kehoe. “The twist this time is that our friendly colleague Greg ‘appears’ alongside Dorothy and her friends in the land of Oz, demonstrating how we give extra to our customers every day.”

The onscreen “your home may be repossessed if you don’t keep up repayments” disclaimer is particularly amusing in this case, as it leads one to imagine whether a certain witch (wicked or not) might double as the bearer of bad news for new homeowners in Oz.
