The fight against gentrification continues in Austin, Texas as more communities and cultures of color—especially Latinx and Black Austinites—are being displaced by the influx of new, largely white-owned businesses.

To highlight the continued cultural erasure in Austin, local artist Harper Biewen created a social media and augmented reality initiative called “What Once Was.” The AR project shows local businesses that once existed and the impact it had on the community.

“What Once Was” debuted today at SXSW in collaboration with Austin based nonprofits Six Square, a non-profit preserving the Black arts, culture and history of Central East Austin, and E4 Youth, a program that utilizes the arts, sciences and technology to help underserved youth pursue careers in the creative space.
