Publicis Groupe chief creative officer Nick Law is leaving to join Apple in September.

Publicis CEO Arthur Sadoun announced what he called “bittersweet news” in an internal memo. Sadoun touted Publicis Groupe’s accomplishments since Law’s arrival from R/GA in May of 2018, including strengthening its creative and strategic teams and brand partnerships, and thanked Law for “bringing to the entire management team and the Groupe creative community a vision and an ambition for modern creativity.”

Law had spent 17 years with R/GA before joining Publicis.

Sadoun said that Publicis will continue that vision going forward with creative leadership such as Liz Taylor, who joined Publicis as a Leo Burnett CCO and Publicis Communications North America CCO back in May; Publicis Sapient Chief Experience Officer John Maeda; and Publicis Groupe U.K. CCO Ben Mooge. He concluded by saying that Publicis will “continue to build a creative collective, based on the belief that the future of creativity needs a broad spectrum of thinkers and makers to deliver the kind of groundbreaking ideas and products that our clients deserve. Together with our creative leaders around the world, they will be responsible for spearheading the world’s best storytelling, experiences and innovation.”

It is unclear if Publicis Groupe has immediate plans to replace Law in the role or what his title will be at Apple. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Tor Myhren, formerly global CCO for WPP’s Grey and president of Grey New York, left that agency to join Apple at the end of 2015.

Law followed Sadoun’s statement with one of his own, in which he called the move “a very hard decision” but ultimately “the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with a brand I’ve admired my whole life was too good to ignore.”

He explained that he will spend the next several months meeting with many at Publicis Groupe but believes the holding company has “the right plan, right model and the right people to solve the big challenges clients are facing,” concluding by thanking “the amazing executive team for your support, the peerless talent for your inspiration, and our fearless leader, Arthur, for his trust.”

We’ve included Law’s memo in full below:

As you just heard from Arthur, I’m leaving the agency world to join Apple,

This was a very hard decision for me. Not only have I enjoyed my time at Publicis, I’ve been energized by the ambition and relentless transformation of the Groupe. Publicis has the right plan, right model and the right people to solve the big challenges clients are facing. I wish I could continue to be a part of the journey—but the once in a lifetime opportunity to work with a brand I’ve admired my whole life was too good to ignore.

I hope our world-class creative community has benefited from my time at Publicis. I’ll spend the next few months meeting with many of you, helping in any way I can – but confident of your future success. I’ve no doubt I’ll maintain the countless deep relationships I’ve developed at the Groupe.

I’d like to thank the amazing executive team for your support, the peerless talent for your inspiration, and our fearless leader, Arthur, for his trust.

All the best,

Nick
