For whatever reason, the news this morning that Folgers was going to start adding its wares to the gourmet coffee aisle got me thinking back … thinking back to a time when Americans actually had to be reminded to drink coffee. It was the 1980s, young adults weren’t drinking enough coffee, and so the National Coffee Association came up with this 30-second java-bration exhorting twentysomethings to “Join the Coffee Achievers.” Best part of the voiceover: “Because coffee is the calm moment that lets you think …” It also features a “Let’s Dance”-era David Bowie, Cicely Tyson and the ELO song “Hold on Tight (To Your Dreams)” as the soundtrack.
