The board says the former chief is 'uniquely situated to lead the Company through this pivotal period'

In a stunning turn of events, Bob Iger is returning as the Walt Disney Company’s CEO after less than a year of retirement.

Disney’s board of directors announced the decision Sunday evening. Current CEO Bob Chapek—who had held the role since February 2020—will be stepping down and exiting the company.

“We thank Bob Chapek for his service to Disney over his long career, including navigating the company through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Susan Arnold, chairman of the board, in the statement.
