Break Media Goes After Zach Braff's Kickstarter Campaign 'Don't Back Zach' initiative aims scrub to celebrity crowdfunding

Listen up, wealthy celebs. You don't need Kickstarter to finance your next project. Save crowdfunding for the cash-strapped creative types out there.

That's the message from Break Media's ScreenJunkies, which has pushed back against Zach Braff's recent Kickstarter campaign with a "Don't Back Zach" initiative.

Braff enlisted Kickstarter to help finance his new movie, "Wish I Was Here," a followup to the indy hit Garden State. In his pitch to potential donors, Braff said he needed the crowdfunding because he wants to have final say on the movie.

But the ScreenJunkies team, perhaps best known for the Web franchise Honest Trailers,  isn't buying it. "Enough is enough. Famous people have two things we normals don’t: money and access. By turning to crowdfunding, they’ve gamed the system, cashing in on their fame to make any project they want with no risk to their own bankroll, and owing no profits to their 'investors' if its a success," ScreenJunkies' "Wookie Johnson" wrote in a blog post Wednesday. "We need to send them a message that this is NOT OK, and with your help we can do just that."

The ScreenJunkies crew is trying to raise enough money to take out a full-page "Don't Back Zach" ad in The Hollywood Reporter (which like Adweek, is owned by Guggenheim Digital Media) The goal is to raise $10,000. As of this writing, they're up to $340 with two weeks to go.

The effort might be futile, though, since Braff's Kickstarter campaign has already surpassed its $2 million goal.
