WXXV in Gulfport to Launch Local Newscasts

By Merrill Knox

After more than a decade without local news programming, WXXV in Gulfport, Miss. will launch two newscasts this fall, according to The Sun Herald.

General manager Bobby Edwards said the station will have 6 and 9 p.m. newscasts, with a morning show potentially added at a later date. WXXV, which is a Fox affiliate with an NBC-affiliated subchannel, will hire 15 full-time employees and several more part-time employees.

“Our decision to produce local news in the market was based on growing the station,” Edwards told The Sun Herald. “We have two of the four major broadcast networks with great network programming and adding local news was the next step to make a difference.”
