WWAY News Director Pays Fine For Driving into MLK Parade

Scott Pickey, the WWAY news director who was arrested for driving into a Martin Luther King Day parade in January, was ordered to pay a fine and complete driving school after pleading guilty to failure to obey an officer.

“I would like to thank Ben David and his DA’s office for working with me to solve this issue,” said Pickey on the WWAY website. “I think we all learned valuable lessons.”

Pickey had also been charged with careless and reckless driving after ignoring police orders to stay in the parking lot of the Wilmington, NC, ABC affiliate during January’s parade. After several requests by Pickey to leave the station’s lot were denied by police, Pickey got in a station vehicle and drove into the parade and was arrested.

Prosecutors dropped the reckless driving charge in exchange for Pickey’s guilty plea. As part of the agreement, Pickey was ordered to pay a $50.00 fine in addition to $190.00 court costs.
