WUSA Sports Director Brett Haber: ‘Sports Is Just Not As Relevant As It Once Was’

Brett Haber, who has been sports director with Washington, DC CBS affiliate WUSA since 2004, announced yesterday he will resign from the station this fall.

Haber is a 17-time Emmy winner who has spent the majority of his career in Washington, DC. Although he has not announced his future plans, he said he intends to focus on live sportscasting because of the shifting relationship between sports and local news.

“Is local [TV] sports changing?” Haber said in The Washington Post. “There’s no question about it. Sports is just not as relevant [to local newscasts] as it once was. If you asked me will my job exist as currently constituted 10 to 20 years down the line, I would say probably not. One thing I do know is that live sporting events will exist, and there will always be announcers for those events.”

Haber also said he wants to spend more time with his two young sons. “I’m not the father I want to be,” he told The Post. “This is a chance to be a dad.” Haber will stay on for the next four to eight weeks while WUSA searches for his replacement.
