After two years in Tampa Bay, WTSP chief meteorologist Tammie Souza has decided to return to Chicago to be with her family. Since Souza accepted the position with Tampa’s CBS-affiliate, her husband has had a difficult time finding job opportunities in the area comparable to what he had while the couple lived in Chicago during Souza’s eight years with the Fox-affiliate there.

“My decision to leave is totally family-based and completely mine,” Souza told the St. Petersburg Times. “I love 10 News and the people I work with–you don’t leave a chief meteorologist job unless it involves something very big.”

Souza is currently negotiating a return to Chicago’s WFLD and it is still unclear what her position would be with the station. WFLD is in the midst of remaking its weather team. Chris Sowers, who replaced Souza, did not have his contract renewed this year and Amy Freeze, WFLD’s current chief meteorologist, is expected to be on her way out when her contract is up in February. There appears to be an opening for Souza, although the station recently signed Mark Bellis, a chief meteorologist with Phoenix’s KNXV.

Souza’s last day with WTSP has not yet been scheduled.
