WOIO GM Bill Applegate Retiring

applegate_woioWOIO GM Bill Applegate told staffers at the Cleveland, OH, CBS affiliate he is retiring after 45 years in the industry.

He wrote in a memo his years at Raycom were the highlight of his career.  “I am immensely proud of our management team at WOIO-WUAB and all of our colleagues here who have contributed to our great success.”

Applegate came to Raycom owned WOIO in 2001. Recently, the station has come under scrutiny over accusations of a “sexually hostile work environment.”

He started his career in broadcasting as an anchor and reporter in Detroit and Los Angeles.  He then worked as news director at stations in Buffalo, Boston and San Francisco. He then worked as news director for WLS in Chicago before moving to news director and station manager at WABC in New York.

In 1990 Applegate switched to CBS as VP and GM of WBBM. After three years he was moved to Los Angeles as VP and GM of KCBS. He joined Raycom Media in 1996.
