WNYW Anchor Greg Kelly Accused of Rape

By Andrew Gauthier

New Yorkers are used to seeing Greg Kelly in the morning, as he anchors WNYW‘s a.m. newscast.  But Kelly is appearing this morning in an unlikely place: on the cover of the New York Post.

Kelly is currently under investigation for raping a young woman in lower Manhattan last October.  He is the son of New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly so the investigation has been turned over to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

“KELLY SON IN SEX PROBE,” declares today’s Post, along with a photo of the WNYW anchor.

The Fox O&O reported on the investigation during its morning show today, with early morning anchor Steve Lacy filling in for Kelly.

“Fox 5 anchor Greg Kelly, the son of NYPD Commissioner Greg Kelly, is under investigation for allegedly raping a woman,” Lacy told viewers.

The woman came forward with the accusation on Tuesday night, according to The New York Times:

The woman told the police that she met the younger Mr. Kelly on the street and that the two went to South Street Seaport for drinks on Oct. 8. They then proceeded to her office at a Lower Manhattan law firm. The woman told the police that the rape occurred at the office. The two continued to have contact by phone and text message after the encounter.

According to the woman’s account, when her boyfriend later learned about the night, he became angry. He then approached the police commissioner at a public event and told him that the younger Mr. Kelly had sexually assaulted his girlfriend.

Kelly denied the woman’s accusation in a statement released by his lawyer on Wednesday night.

“Mr. Kelly is aware that the New York County District Attorney’s office is conducting an investigation,” the statement reads.  “Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation.  We know the district attorney’s investigation will prove Mr. Kelly’s innocence.”
