WMAQ Boss Frank Whittaker Out for Cancer Surgery, Recovery

By Mark Joyella

NBC-owned WMAQ in Chicago will be without station manager and vice president of news Frank Whittaker, likely through the February book. Robert Feder reports Whittaker told colleagues Monday he’s undergoing cancer surgery Thursday and expects to recuperate for at least a month.

“I was diagnosed about three months ago (on Halloween, actually), and have spent recent weeks undergoing tests and researching my options,” Whittaker wrote in a memo to employees obtained by Feder. “Surgery is the best long-term option for me. Prostate cancer, as you may know, is very curable when detected early enough, as mine was.”
