WJW Anchor Apologizes to Viewers for ‘Jigaboo’ Comment

WJW morning anchor Kristi Capel told viewers she was sorry for using a racially offensive term during Monday’s newscast.

“I just want to take a moment to address a comment that I made yesterday that got a lot of attention,” said Capel. “It’s important for me to let you know that I deeply regret my insensitive comment. And I truly did not know the meaning of the word and would never intentionally use such hurtful language.”

Monday, Capel used the word “jigaboo” while talking about Lady Gaga’s Oscar night performance.

After Capel said she promised to learn from the controversy, Wayne Dawson publicly lent his support to his co-anchor.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports “Sources at Channel 8 say that Dawson, a licensed minister, approached station executives yesterday, wanting to make a statement publicly supporting Capel.”

“I think I know your heart and I know you didn’t mean it,” said Dawson. “She’s a good girl. She really, really is,” he told viewers. “And I know you wouldn’t say anything like that knowing.” Dawson then added, “Hey, still my partner,” before extending his hand to Capel.
