With Questions Lingering, Hawks Family Passes Father’s Day Without Daryl

By Andrew Gauthier

Jasmine and CJ Hawks spent this past Father’s Day without their father Daryl, the WMAQ sports anchor who died unexpectedly last month, as Sunday marked yet another day of mourning as well as mystery for Daryl’s two young kids and his wife Sandy.

The 38-year-old sportscaster was seemingly healthy around the time of his death and the initial autopsy was inconclusive. Further testing is expected to take another month or so.

“It just doesn’t make sense,” Sandy, Hawks’s widow, told the Chicago Tribune recently. “He was healthy. We ate right. Every single night and the first thing in the morning I have to ask myself, ‘How could this possibly happen to him?’ Why him?'”

Sandy tells the Tribune that Jasmine and CJ are still surprised that their dad no longer appears on the NBC-affiliate’s 10 p.m. newscast.

“They’re so used to seeing their dad on TV,” Sandy says, “that CJ said, ‘Oh, yeah, I forgot, Daddy’s in heaven. I thought he was at work.'”
