Madison CBS-affiliate WISC announced on Monday that Sarah Carlson is set to become co-anchor of the station’s 10 p.m. newscast. Carlson is a familiar face for Madison viewers, having previously worked at the market’s NBC and ABC affiliates.
Carlson received some unexpected public attention last year when she had a seizure while anchoring WMTV‘s morning newscast. While co-anchor Christine Bellport read a news story on-screen, Carlson was struck by a seizure off-screen and eventually entered the frame, falling into Bellport’s arms. Carlson had been open about her struggle with epilepsy before the incident but this was the first time it had affected her work in such a significant way. According to WISC, Carlson recently underwent surgery to remove a non-cancerous brain tumor that had been triggering her seizures. Now her life is nearly seizure-free.
“We are thrilled to add such an experienced journalist with deep roots in our community,” said WISC news director Colin Benedict. “Sarah knows what’s important to those in south-central Wisconsin and deeply cares about our community.”
Carlson will share the 10 p.m. anchor desk with Eric Franke, who has been with the station since 1997. Benedict said that it’s a natural pairing because the two have been friends for a long time.
