WGN Traffic Reporter Nearly Crashes on Expressway

Erin McElroy, who knows a thing or two about Chicago roadways having served as WGN’s traffic reporter over the past year, narrowly escaped a serious collision on Chicago’s Edens Expressway while driving to work Thursday morning around 2:30 a.m.

McElroy was driving south on the expressway when, according to the Chicago Tribune, a car came barreling down the wrong way of the freeway, heading directly for her.

“Driving in this morning I almost was hit by a car barreling at full speed THE WRONG WAY on the expressway,” McElroy wrote on her Facebook wall, following the incident.  “Just a reminder to keep your wits about you behind the wheel. It can all happen so fast.”

Upon seeing the car, McElroy changed lanes but the vehicle followed her so she quickly pulled off onto the shoulder and was able to avoid a collision.

Police later arrested the driver, a 24-year-old who reportedly sped down the expressway for about 11 miles.  He was taken in for a DUI and having an open alcohol container, among other charges.
