“Once I got there, I noticed that it was basically a war zone going on,” WFAA photojournalist Robert Flagg said, describing the scene outside of a Dallas apartment complex as a group of Fourth of July revelers shot fireworks at each other.
When Flagg arrived at the scene, several young men started aiming their bottle rockets and roman candles in his direction.
“The missiles–or whatever they were–they were hitting, they were bouncing off my chest and off my camera,” Flagg recalled. “One hit me in the back, and it burned my neck and it burned my shirt.” (Raw video above).
According to WFAA, police were called in but the first officers at the scene were forced to take cover as the young men began shooting fireworks in their direction. Unable to disperse the crowd, the officers called in additional units and the young men eventually scattered.
Police consider the firework attacks aggravated assault but they were unable to catch anyone that night.
Flagg suffered a small burn on his neck and the WFAA news vehicle was damaged.
