WCIA Expanding 6PM Newscast

By Aneya Fernando

WCIA-3-Logo-StraightWCIA, the CBS affiliate in Champaign, Ill., has expanded its 6 p.m. newscast to an hour, the station announced yesterday.

As TVNewsCheck’s Paul Greeley reports, WCIA already has a live, hour-long morning show targeted at women (Current) and a live, hour-long, afternoon lifestyle show (ciLiving). Expanding its 6 p.m. newscast aligns with WCIA’s plan for more hyper-local programming.

“We have a history of moving away from syndicated programming,” Coby Cooper, WCIA’s general manager, told Greeley. Cooper told the reporter that the station was already “pushing the envelope on our 30-minute newscast and we had a lot of material we wanted to cover, that we didn’t have the time to handle.”
