Viewers Respond To Stations ‘Sandy’ Relief Efforts

After Hurricane Sandy swept through the North East leaving a trail of destruction its wake, many local stations, station groups and networks stepped up to raise money to help in relief efforts.  Here’s a round up of what their efforts gained:

>WZZM in Grand Rapids, MI and the American Red Cross raised over $33,000 to help the victims of Sandy.  The station held an 11-hour telethon for the effort.

“Our viewers and digital users showed their generosity,” Janet Mason, president and general manager of the ABC affiliate, said in a statement posted to TVNewsCheck.   “We asked them to make a difference, and they responded with their big hearts.”

>KNBC in Los Angeles announced it raised over $630,000 for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.  The NBC owned station held a day long telethon Friday.

“We are so thankful for the outpour of support for those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said president and general manager Steve Carlston.   “The generosity of our viewers who participated in this fundraising effort was extraordinary and we, along with the America Red Cross, are very grateful to the people of Southern California.”

>Media General Broadcast stations raised nearly $100,000 for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.  WFLA (NBC) in Tampa raised more than $28,000, WCMH (NBC) in Columbus raised more than $27,000, WJHL (CBS) in Johnson City, TN raised $25,000 and WJBFWAGT (ABC and NBC) in Augusta, GA raised over $15,000 for the relief effort.

>Disney/ABC Television Group raised more than $16.8 million during its “Day of Giving.”  The “Day of Giving” integrated network news, daytime and primetime shows, owned stations, local affiliates, syndicated programming , online, cable and stores.  All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross.

“Our ‘Day of Giving’ was an enormous success, raising more than $16.8 million dollars to help those impacted by Hurricane Sandy,”  said Anne Sweeney co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television Group.  “From ‘Good Morning America,’ ‘The View’ and our Owned TV Stations to ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live,’ ABC Family, and Radio Disney, the Disney/ABC TV Group came together in an unprecedented fashion to address the storm’s devastation, and I could not be more proud.
