Viewer Reaction Mixed as NECN Debuts New, Network-Style Morning Show

By Andrew Gauthier

NECN (New England Cable News) debuted a brand-new morning show last month in a bid to draw viewers away from the network shows, as well as Boston Fox-affiliate WFXT.

The new show, hosted by Steve Aveson, a former anchor at Providence’s WPRI, and Taryn Winter Brill, a former “Good Morning America” correspondent, takes its cues from network morning shows, offering a mix of news, interviews, and lifestyle segments.

So far reaction to the new show has been mixed, according to The Boston Globe:

NECN representatives say the channel is evolving into a more vibrant news product to attract a broader audience, but reaction has been mixed among viewers and media analysts, who say they don’t recognize the network anymore. Critics assert that NECN executives are bowing to competitive pressure by taking cues from WFXT-TV (Channel 25), the local Fox affiliate–emphasizing flash over substance to attract younger viewers and new advertisers.
