Kirk Varner is packing his bags for Cincinnati. The VP of News at Hartford’s WTNH/WCTX has been named News Director of WKRC, Cincinnati’s #1 TV news outlet.

“After nearly nine years of leading the newsroom at News 8 here in Connecticut,” Varner wrote on his blog on Tuesday. “I have announced that I will be stepping down from that post on December 17th of this year. It has not been an easy decision to do soor one that I have made lightly.”

Varner has a rich history in broadcast news. Before joining WTNH/WCTX in 2002, he spent six years as Vice President of Local News for Time Warner Cable. He also managed news as well as creative services at Buffalo’s WIVB and was the first News Director for ESPN’s “Sports Center”–an experience that should come in handy in sports-mad Cincinnati.

“I am very privileged to be joining an amazing team of experienced broadcast journalists, who lead the way in keeping Cincinnati and the Tri-State area informed each and every day,” Varner said in WKRC’s official announcement.
