Unfavorable Decision in KMBC Discrimination Case

An age and sex discrimination case filed by three senior female on-air personalities at KMBC-TV (Channel 9) is subject to binding arbitration, a federal judge has ruled.

The decision this morning by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays was a setback for the women, who had hoped to try their claims in court, which they viewed as a more favorable forum.

Attorneys for the women–Kelly Eckerman, Peggy Breit and Maria Albisu-Twyman, known on air as Maria Antonia–could not immediately be reached for comment.

Kays’ ruling revolved around a somewhat obscure legal question concerning the interplay of the womens collective bargaining agreements and their personal services contracts with KMBC. More…
