Tara Thomas, evening anchor for Waterloo, IA, NBC affiliate KWWL, will be leaving the station to take a job with a local school district.

According the station’s website, Thomas is expected to leave KWWL later this year to become the director of community and school relations for the Waterloo Community School District. Her appointment is subject to approval by the school board at a meeting March 11.

Jim McKernan, KWWL vice president and general manager, said Thomas has been “a tremendous asset to KWWL” and will be missed.

Thomas started her career at KIMT in Mason City, IA, then was an anchor/produer at KIMA in Yakima, WA.  She started at KWWL in 2002.

Her station bio said, until now, she is the only non educator in her family, “Dad’s a retired superintendent, mom’s a retired elementary principal and my only sibling, Sara, is a second-grade teacher. My husband is a teacher too!”
