‘Some Of The Fun Has Left the Job’: WPEC Sports Anchor Pat Murphy to Retire

By Kevin Eck

Pat Murphy, sports anchor for West Palm Beach CBS affiliate WPEC, has announced he’s leaving TV after 33 years in the business because, as he told The Palm Beach Post, “some of the fun has left the job.”

“I’ve gotten a little disenchanted,” Murphy said. “I’ve seen good people forced out the door or not have their contacts renewed.”

Murphy started his career in 1980 at WKBT in La Crosse, WI.  He worked in Chattanooga, TN, before moving to South Florida where he worked at West Palm Beach NBC affiliate WPTV before moving to WPEC.

Despite his feelings about the businesses, Murphy told The Post his career has not been a grind,

“It has gone by fast,” the 57-year-old Murphy said during a recent lunch. “It has gone by faster than I ever thought it could. I’ve spent half my life here. I never would have imagined I’d be in one city as long as I’ve been here.

Murphy’s last show will be Monday. After that? He told The Post, “I don’t know what the future holds. But I’m looking forward to it.”
