Sibila Vargas Joins WNBC From KCBS

Sibila Vargas is joining WNBC, the NBC owned station in New York, as co-anchor of the noon and 6 p.m. newscasts. Vargas will anchor the noon alongside Rob Schmitt and the 6 p.m. alongside Chuck Scarborough.

Vargas moves to her native New York from Los Angeles, where she has been the early morning anchor at CBS owned KCBS since 2010. She will begin at WNBC in mid-October.

“We are pleased to have Sibila join the team and bring her strong reporting skills home to New York,” WNBC vice president of news Susan Sullivan said in a statement.

Vargas began her career at WPIX, the CW affiliate in New York City. She has worked as an anchor, producer and correspondent at CNN, as well as as an anchor at KRIV in Houston.

New York (August 29, 2013) – NBC 4 New York / WNBC today announced that Sibila Vargas will join the station mid-October.  Vargas will co-anchor the 12 noon and 6 pm news.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to my home town of New York,” said Vargas.   “From my upbringing, I have a genuine perspective on what New Yorkers seek from the news, and I look forward to delivering the information that matters most to them.”

Vargas comes to NBC 4 New York from KCBS in Los Angeles, where she has been the weekday anchor on the 4:30am-7am and 11am newscasts.  Since joining KCBS in 2010, Vargas has covered several breaking news stories including Japan’s devastating 9.0 Earthquake and Tsunami, and LA’s largest manhunt for rogue ex-cop, Christopher Dorner.

Before joining KCBS, Vargas co-anchored the weekday morning newscast at KRIV, where she was recognized by the Texas Associated Press for her work behind the desk.

Vargas also served as an anchor, producer and correspondent at CNN, where she provided regular reports for “Anderson Cooper 360” and “The Situation Room.”  She has also guest co-hosted ABC’s, “The View,” reported for KTLA in Los Angeles, and hosted TV Guide Channel’s, “Hollywood Insider,” and Paramount TV’s, “Real TV.” She began her career in broadcasting as a news writer and producer for WPIX in New York.

In July 2012, at a ceremony attended by thousands in Washington, D.C., Vargas, as a result of her influence and contributions, was one of only 20 Dominican-Americans to become a member of the Dominican American National Roundtable’s “Dominican List.”

The New York native graduated cum laude from Long Island University, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Journalism and Minor in Psychology.  Fluent in Spanish, Sibila has strong ties to the Latino community and has been recognized by the Latin Business Association and the Latino Lawyers Association.
