SC Stations Deploy Forces to Cover School Shooting

By Mark Joyella

Stations in the Greenville-Ashville-Spartanburg market broke in around 2 p.m. ET to cover reports of a shooting at an elementary school, and have yet to end their rolling coverage. The latest reports indicate two students and one teacher were wounded, one suspect is in custody, and a man in his 40s has been found dead in a home near the school.

“These are small kids. These are elementary school kids. And they were evacuated today because someone started shooting,” a reporter said on CBS affiliate WSPA, which had its chopper over the school, and reporters covering the scene at the school building and a nearby church where parents were being directed to pick up their children.

A third active scene, a home about three miles from the school, was described by law enforcement as connected to the shooting at Townville Elementary School.

NBC affiliate WYFF reported the first reports of a shooting came in after 1 p.m. ET, and students were taken away from the school on buses escorted by armed law enforcement. The state’s governor planned a 5 p.m. ET news conference.

CNN picked up coverage from both WYFF and WSPA, while MSNBC used resources from WYFF. Fox News cited reports from Fox Carolina in its coverage.
