Reporter Suing KSHB for Discrimination

Multimedia journalist Lisa Benson is suing Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB for discrimination.

The Kansas City Star reports Benson, who goes by the name of Lisa Benson Cooper, filed suit last month. Attorneys for the Scripps-owned station moved the case to federal court on Monday.

Benson claims she was denied “numerous” promotions after being hired by the station in 2004.

“The positions are consistently rewarded to white employees with far less experience than plaintiff,” the suit alleges. From the Star:

In her suit, Benson alleges that her race is “constantly used” in deciding where, or what topics, she would be reporting. The suit alleges that she was “consistently” being sent to the urban core for all her stories.

Once, she said she was sent alone to the home of a KKK member.

The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

Scripps told TVSpy it won’t comment on pending litigation.
