Phoenix Stations Cover Shootings at Office Park

Phoenix TV stations went live with wall-to-wall coverage after a shooting at a local office complex where police said five people were injured, three of those with gunshot wounds.

The shooting started around 10:30 a.m. when police say a man described as a white male in his 60s opened fire inside a building near 16th street and Glendale avenue in Phoenix.

FOX owned KSAZ broke the story first, but stayed on air the shortest amount of time initially.  The station started with Ron Hoon in the studio at 10:58 a.m. then went to a helicopter shot with Hoon giving an update of the situation and a “we’ll have more for you in one hour” before rejoining regular programming.

ABC affiliate KNXV followed FOX, jumping in to live coverage right off the top of their 11:00 a.m. newscast, choosing to lead with an aerial view of a location they were reporting may have been where the suspect was apprehended by police.

KPNX, the Phoenix NBC affiliate, broke in to the fourth hour of the “Today” show at 11:04 with anchor Doug Meehan giving a short update on the shooting.  The station then rejoined Hoda and Kathie Lee only to come back at 11:12 for extended coverage with a live shot of a victim being wheeled out of the office complex on a stretcher.

KPHO, the CBS affiliate, was last on air cutting in to soap opera “The Young and the Restless” at 11:21 with a helicopter shot of a SWAT team entering a building.
