Changes are underway for the weather team at Panama City’s WJHG. After ten years with the Gray Television-owned NBC-affiliate, Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelley is leaving to join WBRC in Birmingham. While Kelley is on his way out, WJHG welcomes meteorologist Jim Loznicka to its team. Loznicka was fired in May from WPMI, an NBC-affiliate in Mobile.

The WJHG weather team transition was first reported by Florida News Center. It is not yet clear whether Loznicka will assume the Chief Meteorologist role at the station. For now, he will be handling the morning and noon weekday shifts.

Kelley broke the news of his departure on Twitter, using a phrase from a famed University of Alabama football coach to describe Loznicka: “I have accepted a job with WBRC in Birmingham. But I know my replacement, as Bear Bryant used to say, ‘He’s a good ‘un’.”

Kelley attended the University of Alabama and the Broadcast Meteorology Program on the Mississippi State campus. He came to WJHG after working for the doppler radar manufacturer Baron Services.

Loznicka was fired abruptly in May by WPMI. In making the announcement, the station’s general manager, Shea Grandquest, was brief: “All I’ve said is that we appreciate Jim for his years of service and that we wish him well in his official endeavors.”
